The Black Death of Medieval Europe and Their Cures

Published

on

The Black Death was a truly devastating plague that ravaged Medieval Europe between 1347 and 1352, killing somewhere between twenty-five and thirty million people. The bubonic plague causes swelling of lymph nodes in the groin and the armpits which then take on a sickening black colour, which is where the name Black Death came from. Along with the black sores known as buboes (which is where the name Bubonic comes from), the infected would also suffer from fever and joint pain. In fourteenth-century Europe, two-thirds of those who became infected died from the disease, often within seventy-two hours. The disease reduced Europe’s population by around a third and caused major changes in the medieval social structure.

The disease was brought to Europe by rodents that carried fleas with the bacillus bacterium Yersinia Pestis. The black death entered Europe most probably via Sicily where four rat-infested Genoese ships had docked, arriving from Caffa in the Black Sea. The doctors of Medieval Europe had absolutely no idea how the plague started, what caused it or how it spread which meant they were pretty much at a loss on how to treat it or prevent others from catching it. Since they didn’t know about the rats and the bacteria, the Medieval Europeans thought it may have been caused by the wrath of god, or the work of the devil, maybe from the alignment of the planets or unbalanced humours of the body.

How do you think the world would fare if a similar plague were to hit us today?

I cover this topic as well both in my classes and in my channel. I think one of the most interesting topics to explore is the psychological reactions. Many of the "cures" were irrational, In Strasbourg 1000's of Jews were massacred. If you think about it human nature reacts irrationally when things go south. There are many examples of that in History.

If a similar plaque happened today and killed one third of people, the society affects would possibly be worse. Most people get their food from a great distance and most logistics would collapse. The affect of a modern Black Death would be very far reaching.

This is an incredibly nasty thing to say, I'm very aware, but nevertheless: the fewer people there are, the better the situation for the ones left.

Already up to a bad start. Claiming that the bubonic plague ended the feudal system is misleading at best, it certainly contributed to it but it's more complicated than that, specially if you consider that the last feudal system to go down were the Tsars of Russia, almost four centuries later. Also please put your sources on the description because im doubting everything you're saying.

How Africa Shaped Our Christmas Celebrations: Discover the Hidden History

Interestingly, many Christians, particularly Black Christians, are often unaware of the true origins of the December global celebration. Previously, the celebration was variably scheduled in January, March, April, May, or September, reflecting uncertainty about the actual birthdate of Jesus.
The holidays we observe today have their roots in sacred days from ancient Kemetic or what is popularly known as Egyptian culture, where these occasions were timed with celestial events such as the alignment of stars, constellations, and the sun’s position relative to Earth.

The colonial education narrative has consistently taught, and still teaches, Africans that their ancestors relied solely on oral traditions to transmit knowledge and memory. Sadly, Africans in the so-called West, Central, East, and Southern African regions are unaware of writing systems in these parts of Africa.
