Medieval Europe: Crash Course European History #1

Published

on

Our European history is going to start around 1500 with the Renaissance, but believe it or not, that is not the actual beginning of history in the continent. So, today, we’re going to teach you the broad outlines of the so-called Middle Ages, and look at events like the Black Plague, the Hundred Years War, and the Western Schism of the Catholic Church that set the stage for the history of modern Europe.

It’s debatable how much chivalry was ever the distinguishing principle for knights, particularly the parts concerning virtuous or moral behavior. The actual origins of knighthood likely had more to do with local lords needing men to secure their grip on their territory as power devolved and decentralized in post-Charlemagne Europe. Chivalry developed later, and some aspects were likely more or less inventions by late medieval chivalric romances

Medieval Europe was also not a good place to be Jewish as back then just like in the holocaust and even to the modern day anti Semtism towards Jewish people was often common place and in most European countries they had very few if any rights and were often perscueted and attacked and killed or forcibly converted and many European countries even expelled Jewish people and forbid them from living there. Some examples of that are the explusion of Jewish people from England in 1290, and France in 1394. The only countries that were tolerant of Jewish people were Poland and later the Ottoman Empire.

Okay IDEA for another CC History series: Historiography and Historians! something on historiographical trends, changes in the way we view, understand, think about and write history, different schools and scholars, not just western scholars ofc, and certainly not just men. Whatsay?

"it's difficult to grasp just how profound the Black death was but imagine losing half of your community in a few years to a poorly understood disease" not so difficult now in 2022 after the pandemic, a pandemic i don't even feel the need to specify the exact name of, as if it wasn't just ONE in a series of many pandemics in the history of the world..Damn how none of us had any idea how much more relatable this video would get just a couple years later..

How Africa Shaped Our Christmas Celebrations: Discover the Hidden History

Published

on

Interestingly, many Christians, particularly Black Christians, are often unaware of the true origins of the December global celebration. Previously, the celebration was variably scheduled in January, March, April, May, or September, reflecting uncertainty about the actual birthdate of Jesus.
The holidays we observe today have their roots in sacred days from ancient Kemetic or what is popularly known as Egyptian culture, where these occasions were timed with celestial events such as the alignment of stars, constellations, and the sun’s position relative to Earth.

The colonial education narrative has consistently taught, and still teaches, Africans that their ancestors relied solely on oral traditions to transmit knowledge and memory. Sadly, Africans in the so-called West, Central, East, and Southern African regions are unaware of writing systems in these parts of Africa.
