After Masters of the Air and Dune: Part Two in 2024, Austin Butler is teaming up with director Darren Aronofsky for a crime thriller adaptation.

Austin Butler is teaming up with director Darren Aronofsky for a new crime thriller adaptation, Caught Stealing. After beginning his career on television, Butler broke out in a big way with a transformative performance in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis in 2022, which earned him his first Oscar nomination. The actor is also off to an incredibly strong start in 2024 with Masters of the Air and a menacing performance as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two, directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Now, Butler is teaming up with Aronofsky for one of his next projects. According to Deadline, Butler is set to star in the crime thriller adaptation, Caught Stealing, based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston, with Aronofsky directing. The film, with a script written by Huston himself, will follow a “burned-out former baseball player” named Hank Thompson who is “unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ’90s NYC.”

Austin Butler & Darren Aronofsky Are A Perfect Pairing

Butler’s team-up with Aronofsky continues a career trend for the actor who has only collaborated with A-list, Oscar-nominated filmmakers. One of his first breakout roles in film was in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which earned Quentin Tarantino his third Oscar nomination for directing and fourth nomination for screenplay. Baz Luhrmann has two nominations for Best Picture (Moulin Rouge! and Elvis) and Denis Villeneuve has been nominated for directing Arrival and co-writing Dune, the latter also receiving a nod for Best Picture.

, releasing on June 21, and was cast in Ari Aster’s next film,
Eddington
.

Austin Butler has been gaining notoriety and fame for his roles in film and television, and as his star grows he has been in even more great movies.

Having received an Oscar nomination for directing Black Swan, Aronofsky is known for getting great performances out of his actors. He’s directed two Academy Award-winning performances in his career – Natalie Portman for Black Swan and Brendan Fraser for The Whale, with Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler), and Hong Chau (The Whale) also receiving nominations. Aronofsky is best known for surreal psychological thrillers, so Caught Stealing, a crime thriller, marks a career first for him, though he’s still likely to get a great performance out of Butler.
