Nico Williams: Athletic Bilbao winger asks to stop play after alleged abuse by Atletico Madrid fans
Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams scored against Atletico Madrid after accusing a section of home fans of racially abusing him.
The winger tried to get referee Juan Martinez to stop play after alerting the officials to the alleged chanting.
Atletico players Antoine Griezmann and Jose Maria Gimenez then appeared to be urging the home fans to stop the chanting before play resumed.
“I have gone to take a corner and I have heard monkey sounds,” he said.
“There are stupid people everywhere, but nothing happens, we have to keep working,” he told broadcaster DAZN after the match.
“I hope this changes little by little because in the end we are fighting internally and externally against this.”
Talking about his goal celebration, he said: “It comes with a bit of anger, it is not normal that they still insult you because of your skin tone.”
Writing on social media Atletico said the club was “against any act of racism or hatred”.
A La Liga statement said: “There’s no place for racist or hateful behaviour in sport.
“La Liga vehemently condemns any racist acts and will continue working to eradicate this inexcusable behaviour from our sport.”
Williams, 21, cancelled out Rodrigo de Paul’s opener late in the first half.
Angel Correa’s effort early in the second half and an own goal from Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon earned the hosts all three points.
Diego Simeone’s side are now six points clear of fifth-place Athletic with five games remaining, leaving them well positioned to secure Champions League football next season.
Last month, Real Madrid filed a complaint with the Spanish legal authorities after a video on social media appeared to show Atletico fans chanting a racist slur about Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr.

James Anderson: England bowler to retire this summer
Anderson made his debut in 2003 and has taken 700 wickets in 187 Tests – the most by any pace bowler in Test history.
He is third on the all-time list of wicket-takers in Tests behind spinners Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka and Australia’s Shane Warne.
It is not clear whether he will continue to play for his county, Lancashire.
“It has been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I’ve loved since I was a kid,” Anderson said.
“I’m excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years, it’s always meant a lot, even if my face often doesn’t show it.”

Women’s FA Cup final: Robert Vilahamn and Marc Skinner relish Wembley showpiece
Tottenham boss Robert Vilahamn says he has been working his whole career to manage a match at Wembley as he prepares to lead his side out in Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup final.
Manchester United or Spurs will win their first major piece of women’s silverware in Sunday’s showpiece, as both aim to lift the famous trophy for the first time.
While United boss Marc Skinner is taking his side to back-to-back FA Cup finals at Wembley, it marks a full circle moment for Vilahamn.
“I remember as a kid, that stadium was the biggest one I knew and so it was my dream to get there one day,” the 41-year-old said.
“I’ve been working pretty much for 30 years to get to this stadium, so it’s more like enjoying the ride. The feelings I get with that is of course a mixture of stress and happiness.
“But I’m more looking forward to the game and hopefully we will win. If we lose I will be very upset but I know a few weeks after that I will still be very proud of what we have done, so it’s a good feeling.”
United are seven points above Spurs in the league, having played a game more.
Vilahamn says his side head into Sunday’s game as the underdogs, but buoyed by the belief that they can win.
“For me, yes they are favourites, yes they were there last year, but we are taking steps all the time,” he added.
“We feel like we have everything to win and we have a good chance to win.”
