Celtic boss Rodgers rejects Rangers disrespect claims pre-derby

Published

on

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has dismissed accusations of showing Rangers a lack of respect as “without merit”.

Rodgers had said the league leaders “can have a bit of fun” in Saturday’s Old Firm derby, prompting a spiky response from Ibrox boss Philippe Clement.

But Rodgers insists the line was used with “no context whatsoever” and repeated his admiration for “one of the most iconic games in world football”.

Celtic are three points ahead of their Glasgow rivals, with just three matches remaining as they seek a 12th title in 13 years.

“I have never referred to these games other than being intense, being competitive,” said Rodgers.

“I love it. It’s one of the reasons I am here, the great pride and privilege I have in managing Celtic in a Rangers game. So the whole emotion, the whole feeling around this game is absolutely amazing.

“I have seen some of the headlines around the ‘disrespect’ and whatever else but it is totally without merit. I would never be that person to disrespect another manager or another team.”

The league’s top four teams are all represented in the director of rugby of the season category, with Phil Dowson (Northampton), Johann van Graan (Bath), Alex Sanderson (Sale) and Mark McCall (Saracens) nominated.

Harlequins prop Fin Baxter and second rower Chandler Cunningham-South, Exeter winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Newcastle flanker Guy Pepper are shortlisted for breakthrough player of the season.

Northampton finished top of the table despite a defeat by Bath in the final regular season game on Saturday and are aiming to claim their first league title in 10 years.

Ex-England flanker Lawes, 35, who will leave the club at the end of this campaign after 17 seasons to join French side Brive, has started 10 Premiership games for Saints this season.

Fly-half team-mate Smith, 22, made his England debut during this year’s Six Nations after impressing for his club.

The Saints duo have also been nominated for the Investec Champions Cup player of the year award after helping their club to the European Cup semi-finals.

Scotland fly-half Russell, 31, joined Bath from Racing 92 last November and has helped lead the club to a first top-four finish in four years.

England centre Slade, 31, signed a new contract with Exeter last week and is currently the Premiership’s top points scorer this season.

West Ham set to appoint Julen Lopetegui as new manager

West Ham are set to appoint Julen Lopetegui as their new manager later this week.

The former Spain and Real Madrid coach was identified as the Hammers’ first choice to replace outgoing boss David Moyes and, earlier this month, agreed to take up the role.

Now the Premier League season is over, Lopetegui’s contract will be signed, allowing him to take over for the start of pre-season, which includes a two-week trip to the United States for matches against Crystal Palace and Wolves.

Ironically, Lopetegui spent the second half of the 2022-23 season with Wolves, guiding the club to safety. However, he left on the eve of the new campaign after issues over transfer funding failed to get resolved.

Moyes revealed after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City that he has already received job offers but is likely to spend some time with his family after getting only three weeks off last summer.

The Scot has agreed media commitments with BBC Sport and Talksport at this summer’s European Championships.

Former Spain and Real Madrid coach Lopetegui won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 before moving to Wolves two years later.
