With no written records from the Zulus themselves, historians and anthropologists have pieced together their history from a smattering of sources. We first learn of the Zulu as a minor tribe of the Bantu people, living in South Africa. Shaka Zulu, the man who would organize them into an empire, was born the illegitimate son of a Zulu king. He was sent away with his mother Nandi to grow up in her tribe, the Langeni, but he eventually caught the attention of Dingiswayo, the leader of another powerful tribe called the Mtethwa. Appointed as the leader of a squadron called an ibutho, Shaka developed new tactics including a short “iklwa” fighting spear and a simple but effective military maneuever called “the Bull Horn.” When his father died, Shaka – now a successful military leader – returned with Dingiswayo’s backing to assassinate the rightful heir and assume control of his native tribe. Just a year later, though, the neighboring Ndwandwe tribe murdered Dingiswayo and Shaka vowed revenge on their leader, Zwide. He then launched a bloody war that, combined with the strains created by European colonization, led to the Mefacane, or the Crushing.

cant wait to hear how they won agents the brits cuz the they lost agenst like around 200 vs +/- 10.000 agenst the boere and they went up agenst the brits in 2 wars called the anglo boere wars first time they won second time they used internment camps for the women and kids so they gave up

Shaka did not refer to himself as 'Shaka Zulu' nor did anybody. He however was known as Shaka kaSenzangakhona, Senzangakhona being his father. In kwaZulu back then everybody took their father's name as their surname, the prefix 'ka' translates to son of and for women in isiZulu language we used the prefix 'oka' which translates to daughter of. Shaka Zulu is very strange and modern.

Close quarters combat was part of Nguni combat but it was the absolute last resort because we believe killing a man is wrong no matter the reason, we didn't spend the whole day throwing spears at each other cause 1 we realized they could be thrown back and 2 it didn't necessarily get the point across plus the stabbing axe did the exact same thing the short spears did. Make sense of history no1 goes to war to fight at a distance infact it's considered to cowardly in Nguni culture to kill your enemy from a distance which is why we practiced stick fighting as a preliminary tactic in settling violent disagreements between peers
