A conversation on the Black presence in Tudor England

Published

on

Hear scholars Miranda Kaufmann and Michael Ohajuru present on their research into Black Tudors in England during the 16th century.

Ohajuru will introduce the John Blanke Project, an art and archive project in which artists and historians reimagine John Blanke, the Black trumpeter to the Tudor court. Kaufmann will explore the African presence in Tudor England based on original research from her book “Black Tudors: The Untold Story.” Together they will consider the implicit and explicit Black presences in the objects on display in “The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England.”

Omg! I am trying to find the painting of the English explorer John white the very dark skin black man who is now painting as a very pale white guy on yhe internet. I literally remember him being a black man a few years ago now i cant even find those pictures of him. Its so creepy that they are painting every black historical figure as white people.

Totally fascinating. I didn't have much interest in the exhibition until now. If only the captions could be corrected to eliminate blunders such as Milwaukee instead of Miwok.

This is absolutely fabulous and informative. I know little about Black Tudors so thank you for providing this conversation. Looking to take a trip to San Fran to see the exhibit.

How Africa Shaped Our Christmas Celebrations: Discover the Hidden History

Published

Interestingly, many Christians, particularly Black Christians, are often unaware of the true origins of the December global celebration. Previously, the celebration was variably scheduled in January, March, April, May, or September, reflecting uncertainty about the actual birthdate of Jesus.
The holidays we observe today have their roots in sacred days from ancient Kemetic or what is popularly known as Egyptian culture, where these occasions were timed with celestial events such as the alignment of stars, constellations, and the sun’s position relative to Earth.

The colonial education narrative has consistently taught, and still teaches, Africans that their ancestors relied solely on oral traditions to transmit knowledge and memory. Sadly, Africans in the so-called West, Central, East, and Southern African regions are unaware of writing systems in these parts of Africa.
