Deontay Wilder will face Zhilei Zhang on 1 June after making shock move to Matchroom

Published

on

American heavyweight Deontay Wilder has signed with Matchroom Boxing and will face Zhilei Zhang as part of the five-versus-five card against Queensberry Promotions on 1 June in Saudi Arabia.

Wilder’s link up with promoter Eddie Hearn came as a surprise as Matchroom and Queensberry unveiled their fighters at a news conference in London.

Heavyweight Daniel Dubois will face Filip Hrgovic in a world-title final eliminator in Riyadh and Liverpool featherweight Nick Ball will challenge WBA world champion Raymond Ford.

A middleweight contest between unbeaten Londoner Hamzah Sheeraz and American Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams and an all-British cruiserweight bout between Willy Hutchinson and Craig Richards complete the line-up.

The fights will form the undercard to the undisputed light-heavyweight contest between undefeated Russians Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

The fight night will use a point system to declare an overall winner. One point will be awarded for a points win, two points for a stoppage victory and no points for a draw.

Each promoter will select a captain and their results are worth double points.

Nelly Korda: World number one wins Americas Open for sixth win in seven tournaments

Published

on

Nelly Korda secured her sixth victory in seven tournaments by winning the Mizuho Americas Open on Sunday.

The 25-year-old’s level-par 71 saw her win on 14 under, one shot clear of Australian Hannah Green at the Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City.

Korda started the final day with a two-shot lead but had three bogeys and one birdie on the front nine to be level with Green at the halfway point.

After matching each other down the stretch it was the Australian who blinked first, missing a par putt on the 18th that would have forced a play-off.

The victory means American Korda bounced back at the first opportunity after her winning streak of five came to an end at last week’s Cognizant Founders Cup.

The world number one’s run had included last month’s Chevron Championship, the first major of the season.

It was Korda’s 14th LPGA Tour victory as she became the first American to win six or more times in a season since Beth Daniel won seven times in 1990. American legend Mickey Wright holds the record with 13 victories in 1963.

Korda will next turn her attention to the US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club, which begins on 30 May.

Great Britain’s Olympic BMX champion Bethany Shriever has fractured her collarbone two months before defending her title at the Paris 2024 Games.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury at the BMX Racing World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

She crashed out on the final straight in her semi-final on Saturday.

“Not how I wanted my World Champs to end, but it’s BMX,” Shriever posted on Instagram on Sunday.

“Leaving this four-week trip with a fractured collarbone, time to get our heads down and get to work. Grateful for the team behind me.”

Shriever claimed Britain’s first BMX Olympic medal with gold at Tokyo 2020.

This summer’s Olympics begin on Friday, 26 July.
