What Was Life Really Like for Medieval Nobility in Europe?

Published

on

In the medieval feudal system, the nobility were generally those who held a fief, often land or office under vassalage in exchange for military allegiance to their sovereign.

Living alongside serfs, it was their duty to ensure that the peasants, craftsmen and clergymen were defended so that they could live in peace and act as judges to handle disputes.

To explore the often ostentatious and gluttonous lifestyles of the nobility, Eleanor Janega visits Hedingham Castle, perhaps the best preserved Norman keep in Essex, England.

    Correction:
They were devout Catholics, not devout Christians.
Catholicism is a world away from Christianity.
Catholics were in power, and in fact, thought Christians were heretics…hence the eventual establishment of the inquisitions/torture/executions during the middle age period.

The comment about "they liked things so colorful that we would find them a bit gaudy by modern standards"… I've always felt this was true. I think if our film productions really showed how people used to dress and decorate, those period pieces would so much cornier than we make them.

Great video, and I'll have to go do some reading because I figured that guard houses were in the base of castles because it was the obvious route invaders would have to take, and overcome in order to get to the castle's lords. It does make sense that it acts as an act of conveying their strength for peaceful visitors, but just seems like that would be a distant second to the obvious tactical reasoning. I look forward to my soon-to-be reading list to figure that out.

I have often thought – and lectured my children about – the fact that normal people in the UK in the 21st Century enjoy a standard of living that Medieval kings could only dream of.
We live in warm dry homes. We have myriad machines to do most of our work. We can drive a hundred miles on a whim to take a day trip somewhere whenever we want. We have access to modern medicine and drugs. DENTISTRY! in not the horror it was only 100 years ago. We go thousands of miles on holiday often several times a year. We enjoy the rule of law, democracy and peace. No one in my generation has had to pick up a halberd oor sword or bow to defend his village from bandits or the local nobility.
    HALCYON DAYS 🙂

How Africa Shaped Our Christmas Celebrations: Discover the Hidden History

Published

on

Interestingly, many Christians, particularly Black Christians, are often unaware of the true origins of the December global celebration. Previously, the celebration was variably scheduled in January, March, April, May, or September, reflecting uncertainty about the actual birthdate of Jesus.
The holidays we observe today have their roots in sacred days from ancient Kemetic or what is popularly known as Egyptian culture, where these occasions were timed with celestial events such as the alignment of stars, constellations, and the sun’s position relative to Earth.

The colonial education narrative has consistently taught, and still teaches, Africans that their ancestors relied solely on oral traditions to transmit knowledge and memory. Sadly, Africans in the so-called West, Central, East, and Southern African regions are unaware of writing systems in these parts of Africa.
