If you’re diving down Melrose, you might pass by an inconspicuous shop with a mysterious logo of a man smiling in a backwards cap and shades. Little do most onlookers realize that this shop is actually the storefront to one of the largest sports cards and memorabilia companies in the world: Dappz Sports. However, it’s likely many sports and collecting fans walking by have seen the company’s videos go viral on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram.

Dappz Sports bolsters an online presence of 1.2 million social followers, solidifying its name in the card collecting industry (aka “the hobby”) as the top content creator in the hobby as far as viewership — averaging 35 million monthly viewers across all platforms. With multiple viral videos that have surpassed millions of views, from satire shorts of NFL games to slime challenges, the company separated itself from the pack with an unmatched digital footprint amongst hobby influencers. The company’s dedication to fans has led to Dappz Sports becoming the number one seller on TikTok Shop in the U.S., eclipsing $20 million total sales by the end of 2023.

“We’re proud of the growth our brand has had in the past year,” said Mathew “Dappz” McGuckin. “We’ve proved that we’re not only actively moving trading cards and sports culture but becoming a virtual and viral phenomenon amongst our fans and more. We understand our audience deeply and strive to give them the content they love to see on a regular basis, while sticking true to our live-shopping roots that shot us to the top of the hobby.”

The company’s live shopping approach was very much intentional. Dappz Sports quickly rose to prominence by being one of the earlier adopters of this eCommerce strategy, where McGuckin could stream and entertain fans while allowing them to purchase products directly from the stream. When the world was shut down during the pandemic, McGuckin went live from his bedroom to capture his process of buying ungraded cards and flipping them for profit. Soon enough, he was selling boxes of cards to other connoisseurs and Dappz Sports started making waves in the hobby.

“We’re a sports media company before anything else. Everything was content driven from the beginning but as more people tuned in to be a part of the journey, I realized I could sell to people directly from the stream. Timing is everything because we just happened to be the first ones to do it on TikTok and everything just took off from there,” shared McGuckin.

While content allowed Dappz Sports to quickly garner a powerful online presence, McGuckin and his team made sure to build off of this momentum by meeting the fans in person wherever they could. They established a Dappz Sports booth at nearly every card show and fan convention across the country, bringing the brand to Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, San Diego, Vegas, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, and more. McGuckin has orchestrated fan giveaways alongside Gary Vee and even interviewed Steve Aoki about his journey in the hobby after helping the world-renowned DJ find a rare Star Wars “Yoda” card worth upwards of $15,000. Despite these incredible celebrity collaborations, Dappz Sports stays true to the same fans that brought them to the dance.

“The most important thing for us is to meet thousands of hobby enthusiasts from all over the world. We have millions of followers on social media but it’s incredibly rewarding to engage with the fans in person whenever we get a chance to give back — whether through giveaways, taking pictures, or just simply talking shop about the hobby that we all love” said McGuckin.

The in-person engagement is still the core of what the company values. Although the majority of sales come from online shoppers, the company has established its main storefront here in the City of Angels. Open Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5, local Angelenos and those visiting the city can purchase the hottest boxes of cards in person and meet fellow collectors.

McGuckin is always there to talk shop with fans at every convention — from the National Sports Collectors Convention (NSCC) to L.A. Comic Con. The trust that Dappz Sports has built has led to key content deals with eBay, Fanatics, and Topps to further establish its position as a force to be reckoned with in the live-shopping landscape.

“We have big plans for the company and we’re just getting started,” said McGuckin. “One day, I see us running 100 streams, expanding to all kinds of markets from shoes, toys, merchandise, and TCG products. Although as of now we’re primarily focused on sports and trading cards, I know Dappz will be a much larger, all-encompassing brand down the line. In 2024, we’re going to build off of this momentum to further prove that we are unrivaled when it comes to this space.”

Dappz Sports shop is located at 7578 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036. You can visit their online store and hop on the 24/7 live stream at https://dappzsports.com.

Michael Keaton Totally Forgot He Was in a Marvel Movie

Published

Michael Keaton has portrayed some of cinema’s most iconic characters, including Beetlejuice and Batman, so the actor should be forgiven for forgetting he played one of the best villains in a Marvel movie. Keaton made his MCU debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming as an updated version of the popular comic-book villain, the Vulture. The MCU’s Vulture harnessed alien technology from the Battle of New York (shown in The Avengers) to develop dangerous technology, as opposed to wearing a skin-tight bird suit.

While participating in the WIRED Autocomplete Interview, Michael Keaton reflected on his time in the MCU. At least, he tried to. The actor completely forgot he appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Keaton said he was asked about the movie a few days prior, and had to look it up on Google to remember who he actually played. Keaton said:

“I just saw this shot the other day. That great shot in the car, where I’m looking in the mirror. Somebody was asking me a question about this and I actually couldn’t remember. I had to Google myself to figure out what the hell, what I was doing in that shot. And I’m Vulture, of course.”

Michael Keaton reprised the role during a brief cameo in the internet’s favorite movie, Morbius (sadly, he didn’t utter the iconic line “it’s Morbin’ time”). Keaton never showed his face in the scene, as Vulture wore his militaristic helmet when meeting Jared Leto’s vampiric character. The scene was intended to set up the Sinister Six in a future Sony/Marvel movie. However, this cameo has yet to be paid off as the Sony Spider-Verse is still in shambles following the release of Madame Web.

Michael Keaton Coolly Explains Why He’s the Best Batman

While Michael Keaton had a hard time remembering his villainous character from Spider-Man: Homecoming, there’s one superhero he’ll never forget playing. Keaton played Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s Batman, the movie that re-defined the character on the big screen, following Adam West’s lighthearted tenure. Keaton loves looking back on his time as The Dark Knight. He even quoted the famous line, “I’m Batman,” during a commencement speech at Kent State University in 2018. During the interview, Keaton was asked why his version of Batman is the best. Not mincing words, Keaton simply said:

During his time as Batman, Michael Keaton said he learned a valuable career lesson from his co-star, Michael Gough, who played Alfred. During production, Keaton was still in the early days of his career. He remembered asking Gough “Do you think actors get better as they get older?” Keaton never forgot his response:

“I’ll never forget, he said, ‘I think they just get more.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘You just get more of what you are, you know?’ Always stuck with me.”

Let’s see if Michael Gough’s theory is true as Michael Keaton returns to the screen this spooky season as Beetlejuice in Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees Keaton return as, once again, the juice gets loose. The movie also stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, both reprising their roles from the original film, alongside newcomer Jenna Ortega.
