Dirk Verbeuren Exposes Dave Mustaine’s Secret Riff Box From 1980
In a recent conversation with Portugal’s Look Mag, Dirk Verbeuren revealed that Dave Mustaine has a box of riffs from the 1980s that he revisits for new music.
The drummer confirmed that Mustaine keeps a box of 1980s riffs, saying:
“Yes, he has. There’s a folder that he has that has everything he’s ever recorded. He’s sitting in 1984, maybe, on his couch in his apartment and, like, ‘Oh, this is a cool riff. I’m gonna record it.’ It’s there.”
Verbeuren shared in which record they used some of those riffs:
“So he has a massive collection of stuff, and we actually went through a bunch of those while we were writing and used some of them. Like some of the riffs in ‘We’ll Be Back’, which is the first single from ‘The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!’, they go way back to the ’80s. So, yeah, it’s pretty crazy.”
A New Megadeth Album Is In The Works
In the same interview, the musician was also asked how he feels about Mustaine starting work on new material for the next album after ‘The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!’ He said:
“I’m happy about it. I’m very excited to do that again. It was a lot of fun creating ‘The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!’ And whenever he’s ready, I will be there. I’m happy to start working with Teemu [Mäntysaari, new Megadeth guitarist], who’s now joined the band. I think he will contribute a lot of cool stuff.”
Besides Teemu Mäntysaari, Dirk is also excited to work with other Megadeth members:
“And, of course, James [LoMenzo, Megadeth bassist] also, who is an amazing bass player with a lot of history. He’s already been on a couple of Megadeth albums before, so he also knows what Megadeth sounds like. And so, yeah, it’s gonna be really cool to be with those two guys. And, of course, with Dave, just get together and see what we can come up with.”
In a recent interview with Metal Global, James LoMenzo also confirmed that the band is actively working on new music. He said he feels excited about Mustaine’s eagerness to create fresh music with the revamped lineup.

Minnesota Vikings Rookie Khyree Jackson Dead at 24 After Car Crash
The NFL is mourning one of their own.
Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Upper Marlboro, Md. early July 6, less than three months after he was selected by the team in the fourth round of the league’s 2024 draft. He was 24.
Maryland State Police said in a statement that the athlete had been riding in a Dodge Charger with Isaiah Hazel, 23, and Anthony Lytton Jr., 24, his former teammates from Wise Jr. High School. The latter two had also played at Florida State and Penn State, and Maryland and Charlotte, respectively, according to multiple reports.
Jackson and Hazel, the driver, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and Lytton died after being taken to a hospital, police said.
A preliminary investigation indicates that around 3 a.m., a female driver of an Infinity Q50 had attempted to change lanes while driving fast when she struck the car carrying the athletes and then also hit a Chevrolet Impala. The Charger subsequently traveled off the road and hit multiple tree stumps, police said.

Seeing the Stars of Top Gun Then and Now Will Take Your Breath Away
Astrophysicist and civilian Top Gun instructor Charlie Blackwood took Maverick’s breath away and theirs was a cinematic love story for the ages…or at least the 1980s, since McGillis said she was not asked to be in the sequel. And she almost didn’t make it into the first film, either.
“I didn’t want to do it,” she recalled to The Guardian in 2001. “But because I’d done Witness, I owed Paramount another film, and my agent said, ‘You have to do this.’ I took one look at it and said, ‘This is like a Western in the sky—I don’t wanna do this.’ It wasn’t about acting, it was about being a cartoon character. You know what I mean? I could have done it blindfolded. I was grateful for the fact that it gave me opportunities I wouldn’t otherwise have had. But I showed up for work, did my bit, hung out with a bunch of boys, played baseball, and went home. It was like being at camp. Why they hired me I’ll never know.”
McGillis next portrayed a prosecutor seeking justice for a rape victim played by eventual Oscar winner Jodie Foster in The Accused. She kept acting in the likes of The Babe, North and many smaller films and TV movies, but she also opened a restaurant in Florida with her yacht mogul second husband, Fred Tillman, in the 1990s and put acting on the back burner.
She has two daughters with Tillman, whom she divorced in 2002. She came out as gay in 2009 and had a civil union ceremony with Melanie Leis in 2010, but they broke up the following year.
“I think just my priorities in life changed,” McGillis told Entertainment Tonight in 2019 from home in North Carolina. “It wasn’t like a major decision that I made to leave [acting], it was just that other things became more important. I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don’t know. To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame.”
