Colorism in the Black Community : Confronting A Sad Truth

Published

on

The term “colorism,” introduced by Alice Walker in 1983, describes bias against individuals with darker skin tones, often within the same ethnic group. This issue has roots in slavery, where lighter-skinned African Americans received privileges. Today, colorism impacts various aspects of life, including marriage prospects, job opportunities, and even prison sentences, with darker-skinned individuals often facing harsher outcomes.

A necessary conversation. I truly believe colorism is what wiped out Black populations worldwide.
Yes the invasions are part of it. But it seems internalized self-erasure has been the most harmful.
Listening to the stories of Ancient Asia: Persians, Indians, and China is evidence to me that our people have suffered greatly from colorism for thousands of years. Based on what the Asians say, it was about 5,000 years ago when pale skin started to be preferred. I think that matches the timeline of the invasions in ancient Asia.

Thank you for bringing up this difficult topic.

it's global actually. it's for a simple reason. Human beings have basic desires. such as ; to be happy, to be treated fairly, to be able to own a home, have a decent job, to not be oppressed and freedom of thought + more. Historically these basic desires were stripped away from those with the most color, melanin concentration. This where colorism began. As the basic human desires we all possess were stripped away during colonialism, and give mainly to those of British descent. It became tempting to become closer to what a British is in order to regain these basic desires.

This not only affects Africans but all non-brutish people, with the only difference being it's a lot easier for them to assimilate and due to lesser melanin. All they had to do was dye their hair blonde, change their last name and speak English well. Full assimilation and access to basic desires once again. What's interesting is most Africans carry a strong sense of pride, and choose to fight the structure tooth and nail rather than giving up their core identity in order to regain the desires which go unfulfilled due to racism. I see this admirable. Any chameleon can blend into a new territory and gain the rights of the people there. Takes courage to keep one's identity intact while demanding that basics of life be restored and not placed behind a pay wall/ color wall.

Colorism, like racism, is a disease of the mind. It's sick.🥺

A possible topic for the future: an examination of the invaders from the North. What happened to the people who were conquered? What were their opinions of the invaders constant attacks, especially Ancient Persians? Is this who Ancient China was trying to keep out but failed?

I'm reading a fictional series by Tahereh Mafi, This Woven Kingdom. Based in Ancient Persia, there's an oppressed powerful and magical people who suffer from extreme prejudice, are hunted, and criminalized for practicing their innate magic. Barely surviving they are forced to live as an underclass under the domination of their conquerers. Their questions are similar to Black Americans: why, why do they hurt us? A constant look for a savior, and a proposed solution that is similar to integration in the US, the main character, the hidden princess and savior of her people, is being led to believe that marrying the oppressor king will bring salvation to her people.

Its very interesting that Ms. Mafi, an Iranian woman, would be so perceptive to the thoughts, hopes, and sufferings of an oppressed people. Where is her perspective coming from? What are the ancient stories of the ancient Persians? Were they the first to be invaded by the pale northerners?

Internalized racism is the greatest threat to the Black community in my opinion.

Thank you for this video. Indeed, the topic is difficult but must be looked at from time to time. The promotion of whiteness is so prevalent that one must make a conscious effort to counter it by looking more favorably on darker-skinned people.
In an earlier video, it was shown that the Nile Valley civilizations viewed blackness as beautiful, to say the least. Our cultural context has changed, but our values don't have to. Black is beautiful, not accidental.

I don't know if colorism will vanish when Blacks in America do not control their image in the media, and they are a bottom caste.

Great presentation and great video! However, we should stop equating all members of the white skin, because it is well known that all evil in Africa originated from Western Europe colonization and North America slave trade. People living in Eastern Europe have also been exposed to discrimination and slavery for centuries even though they are white-skinned.

Did you notice that in your video, most of the people presented in it were female? Colorism for the most part is focused on black women, not men. What really irritates me is this myth that somehow dark-skinned men are seen as less attractive, that is a load of rubbish. What you don't seem to understand with men, is that it's different, people are THREATENED by black men and feel jealous. This is probably why you have more dark-skinned men in jail, than light-skinned guys. The prejudice that comes with men, is that dark-skinned men are seen as more aggressive and dangerous than light-skin, but that doesn't translate into less attractive ( it can do though, for example, if you are threatened by black men). I grew up among white people, and sometimes I would be the only black person or one of the few black people in a place. I look like a typical African, and from an early age I felt good about my appearance. In a lot of cases, the problem was jealousy, there is even an expression called tall, dark, and handsome. However a lot of the prejudice is directed towards black women, and I think in a lot of cases it is done deliberately because certain people know it's something they can pick on.

This behavior is a subset within the framework of the fraud of "white reactionary inferiority complex". It's mostly very subtle to the naives, and they can't believe they've been tricked, deny it, and by default support the very diabolical dynamic which hamstrings and destroys them. I see this after years of self-observation and field, and book study. When you see it, it's as if you are amongst the dead. But you can't un see it. You feel isolated and want to return to "sleep". You can't. Find others that helps.

Any where in the world that the colonizers came to in large numbers and settled for a while then the number of mixed race people were and still is very high.

We should not put off this subject matter for another time. It needs to be discussed and healing take place now. We are in a spiritual and physical war right now and must unite in order to have strength in numbers to combat our 5-Brother adversaries, their agents/allies and Controlled Oppositions/Trojan Horses. We need collective wisdom, knowledge and understanding — discernment of Truth that will set us free and protect us mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Colourist is much more prevalent in the asian community especially in India where skin lightening cream is prevalent. Look at Bollywood, to be a main character you have to almost look white. In the white community everyone wants to be tanned and dark. No one wants to have pale skin because it is just unattractive. You do not hear women say I want a tall pale and handsome man.

Well, the best skincolor to have is the bleu black one; you will be 80 and look 60, you will be 60 and look 40, no marks, smooth black skin, no skin cancer and you look younger then you are till the day you die.
I am black, I wish that in a next life I ll be black again. The white skin brings too much bad karma……

Postmodernism and Its Impact, Explained.

Helen Pluckrose outlines some of the arguments later explored in depth in her bestselling 2020 book, Cynical Theories (co-authored with James Lindsay). The essay charts the pernicious influence of postmodernist thinking on two generations of academics and activists. If you want to understand how we got to a place where microaggressions are denounced as violence but the brutal terrorism of an intifada is considered righteous, this is an important primer.

Iona Italia reads Helen Pluckrose’s essay published in Quillette: https://quillette.com/2024/05/07/how-french-intellectuals-ruined-the-west-foucault-lyotard-derrida/
