What Was It Like When Medieval Commoners Met Royalty

Published

on

Encounters with monarchs were not reserved for the rich and powerful alone, but did medieval peasants ever meet their lords? Surprisingly, they sometimes did.

“Commoners” denotes a large group of men and women who didn’t have noble titles. This included everyone from wealthy merchants to peasants who struggled to make ends meet. Surviving records reveal that medieval monarchs had encounters with these commoners – though it’s hard to get a sense of what exactly commoners thought of these meetings. Were they cynical, excited, or indifferent about them?

We have this system in America. The Monarchy sits in Washington DC in Congress and we are their subjects.

It sounds like Edward the Confessor did basic first aid, not just a performance. If the lumps were truly full of pus and shit then removing that and patching them up would probably help

Good topic lords and ladys! Thank you Mr. Blank, oh august narrator! Why any monarch just confer a little title on someone and just marry them. Wasn't there some weird law whereby a king could bounce with an about to be wed maiden?

It's funny when you think of a king and when you break it down for like 2 different job titles in one it's like there's a president of the country and then they are the judge and the jury for the country that would be your modern out look at it so it would be like one man with two different jobs and definitely no time LOL

Its a nice surprise to hear of rulers actually being… decent people and not so cruel as others. I wish these circumstances were as widely known as the blood thirsty and callous rulers are.

You just have to respect a ruler that died in war. All leaders should fight in their wars.

My understanding of the biblical foot washing was that Yeshua was his disciples' teacher and he was not only humbling himself to serve his students, but also that he was removing the dust from their feet symbolically in order to send them out into the world to teach and make disciples as he had done, so it was like a graduation ceremony of sorts. Back then, students (disciples) walked so close to their teachers (rabbis) that the dust from the teachers' steps would get on their own feet. Walking with their teachers was not just a literal thing, but symbolic because a student was not only walking and learning by listening and observing, but also walking in the ways of the teachings themselves. Therefore, this silly piety posing was just that, silly. They were doing something completely out of context and in complete ignorance.
