Mick Mars On Vince Neil’s Decline As A Frontman: ‘It Is What It Is’

In a recent interview on The Mike Calta Show, Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars spoke about Vince Neil’s struggles as the band’s frontman.

The host asked how he felt watching Neil face difficulties over the years. Mars replied:

“Um, well, it is what it is. The road takes a toll on everybody, really. And, um, it’s kind of like family — people fall out and people come back. And it’s just the way it works. It’s just the way it works.”

Fan Reactions And Criticisms

Neil received criticism from fans and online commentators about his weight and vocal performance. This criticism reached a peak after a solo performance in 2021. The singer had to leave the stage mid-song due to losing his voice. This incident caused Neil to take a break from performing. However, he announced a return with new tour dates later.

In 2021, fans expressed their concerns loudly online after a disappointing performance at the Acura Grand Prix Of Long Beach. Some suggested Neil should not perform live anymore. Others preferred that John Corabi take over as Mötley Crüe’s frontman for their upcoming tour.

Industry Support For The Frontman

Although fans were concerned, industry figures like Sammy Hagar and Eddie Trunk defended Neil’s vocal capabilities. Moreover, The Darkness’s Justin Hawkins addressed the rocker’s use of pre-recorded vocals, saying:

“In this footage here, he’s not singing every chorus. I think there are probably some pre-recorded backing vocals because they just sound perfect. But he is singing his parts, and the bits he’s doing, he’s doing in the original key. It looks like he’s pretty energetic, and I think there are a lot of positives to be drawn from it.”

Unlike earlier negative feedback, Hanoi Rocks singer Michael Monroe praised Neil’s recent live performance. Monroe had an opportunity to see Mötley Crüe live for the first time last year.
