How to Build Muscle and Lose Fat, According to a Nutritionist

Published

on

With a very full heart (and equally full hands) I recently became a mother of two. As such, I’ve leaped back into the spotlight of mood swings, pelvic floor dysfunction, and sleepless nights. But there’s one postpartum experience I completely forgot about: muscle loss. Days after delivering both of my boys, it was as if poof most of my muscle mass disappeared—despite an active pregnancy. With strength goals on the horizon, it’s a fitting time to share how to build muscle and lose fat. After all, many of us are on a quest for a fitter, stronger body (postpartum aside!).

But how can you shed unwanted pounds without drastic measures? Fortunately, we’re taking a practical approach. Welcome to a realm where wellness meets realism—a guide to achieving your fitness goals, sans restrictive diets or extreme workout routines.

Don’t be Shy About Your Physique Goals

We love a woman on a mission. With that in mind, own your physique goals with confidence! Inevitably, being timid about your aspirations (provided they’re accompanied with healthy intentions) will only delay your achievements. This is your open invitation to share your goals—whether quietly with friends or via a megaphone on social media. In turn, you’ll feel empowered, motivated, and accountable. Plus, you’ll inspire others through your transparency. And this is the kind of ripple effect that does double-duty: breaks down stigmas surrounding body image and fitness.

Getting Back to the Basics

In an era saturated with fad diets and quick-fix workout regimes, the pursuit of sustainable weight loss (and building muscle) can feel contradictory. But good news! Striking a balance between shedding unwanted pounds and sculpting lean muscle doesn’t involve hours on the elliptical. In fact, that might do more harm than good. Ultimately, by understanding the fundamentals of muscle growth and fat loss—as well as implementing evidence-based strategies—anyone can embark on a journey toward a stronger, leaner body.

Why is building muscle important?

Spoiler alert: muscle does more than just tone your physique. It plays a vital role in supporting overall health and longevity. For example, increased muscle mass contributes to a higher metabolic rate (you burn more calories at rest!), supporting weight maintenance, healthy blood sugar levels, and a lower risk of obesity-related diseases. Additionally, building muscle improves bone density and promotes better posture. And this reduces the likelihood of injury and enhances your quality of life. Last but not least, preserving muscle mass is crucial as we age. After all, it helps mitigate age-related muscle loss—known as sarcopenia—and maintain vitality in our later years.

How long does it take to build muscle?

This depends on several factors: genetics, training intensity, nutrition, and consistency. If you’re not doing any resistance training, you’ll likely notice significant gains within a few weeks. This is due to stimulus to your muscles and initial increases in muscle glycogen stores (how we store carbs). That said, substantial muscle growth takes time. Think months to years of dedicated training. The average person gains approximately 0.5-1 pound of muscle per week during the initial stages of training, with progress gradually tapering off.

The Best Ways to Build Muscle

Building muscle doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual process. But with a well-designed training program, the right nutrition, and plenty of persistence, you’ll achieve optimal muscle growth. In other words, a change in your physique necessitates a synergistic approach.

Resistance Training

Any form of resistance training, which involves lifting weights or bodyweight exercises, is the cornerstone of muscle development. Focus on compound exercises, like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and rows. These engage multiple muscle groups for maximum stimulation. Additionally, progressive overload is key. Gradually increase the weight, reps, or sets over time to continually challenge your muscles and spur growth.

Consider working with a physical trainer for specific instructions and guidance.

Proper Nutrition

In addition to exercise, proper nutrition is fundamental. It plays a pivotal role in supporting muscle growth and recovery. Before and after your workouts, make sure to eat enough high-quality protein. For most, that looks like 0.8-1 gram per pound of body weight per day. This optimizes muscle protein synthesis. Additionally, prioritize complex carbohydrates. These fuel workouts and replenish glycogen stores.

How do you know if you need to lose body fat?

With building muscle in the rearview mirror, let’s switch gears to fat loss. While I am anti-diet culture, I’m not anti-fat loss. These two things can co-exist. Under certain circumstances, shedding visceral body fat (the type stored in the abdominal cavity around important organs), might be an important and vital goal. With that in mind, it’s important to know whether or not losing body fat makes sense. Here are several indicators to keep in mind:

1. Body mass index (BMI). While not a perfect measure, BMI provides a general indication of whether your weight falls within a healthy range based on your height. A BMI calculation above 25 is considered overweight, and a BMI above 30 indicates obesity. Note that BMI doesn’t account for muscle mass, so it may not accurately reflect body composition for those with higher muscle mass.

2. Body comp analysis. For a more accurate assessment of body fat percentage, consider a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), or skinfold caliper measurements. These methods provide insight into the proportion of lean muscle mass versus body fat.

3. Waist circumference. Unfortunately, excess fat around the waist is particularly harmful. It increases the risk of chronic diseases (type 2 diabetes, heart disease, etc.). Men with a waist circumference greater than 40 inches and women with a waist circumference greater than 35 inches may have an increased risk of health problems.

4. Health markers. Have your doctor evaluate key health markers—blood pressure, blood glucose levels, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides. Elevated levels may indicate the need for fat loss.

5. Physical fitness. Excess body fat impairs everything from physical performance to stamina and flexibility. If you find it challenging to engage in physical activities, fat loss could be the missing link.

6. Personal goals. Whether you aim to improve athletic performance, enhance physical appearance, or reduce the risk of chronic diseases, losing body fat may align with your goals and intentions.

How to Lose Fat in a Healthy and Sustainable Way

Along with building muscle, losing excess body fat is often a parallel objective. But as mentioned, it’s important to approach fat loss in a manner that prioritizes health and sustainability over rapid results (or extreme measures). Below are a few ways to get started.

Evaluate your eating habits

Begin by evaluating your current eating habits. Identify areas where you can make more nourishing choices (like having a savory vs. sweet breakfast or swapping excess sugar for a bowl of berries). Focus on consuming whole, nutrient-dense foods—particularly protein—which provides satiety and muscle growth.

Aim for more steady-state movement

In addition to dietary changes, incorporating regular physical activity is essential. Engage in a combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (walking, swimming, etc.) or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week. Couple that with at least two days of full-body strength training.

Be patient

Remember, sustainable progress takes time! Be patient and consistent with your efforts. Slow and steady wins the race. Of course, don’t forget to prioritize adequate sleep, hydration, and stress management. All of these impact your ability to achieve and sustain fat loss.

Should you focus on fat loss during a specific phase of your menstrual cycle?

Not necessarily. Even if you cycle sync, there isn’t a set time during the menstrual cycle that’s universally recommended for weight loss and muscle gain. That said, you may find it beneficial to focus on strength training and muscle building during the first half of your cycle (follicular phase). During this phase, energy levels tend to be higher.

On the other hand, during the second half of the cycle (luteal phase)—when progesterone dominates—you may want to focus on lighter or maintenance workouts and prioritize nutrition. When in doubt, listen to your body and adjust your fitness and nutrition approach accordingly!

5 Tips to Gain Muscle and Lose Body Fat

To bring this full circle, losing visceral fat—while preserving muscle mass—is a multifaceted approach that combines targeted dietary modifications, exercise strategies, and lifestyle interventions. Here are several evidence-based strategies to help you reduce visceral fat without sacrificing muscle:

1. Prioritize strength training. Incorporate resistance training into your exercise routine to build and maintain lean muscle mass. Aim for 2-3 strength training sessions per week, progressively increasing the intensity and resistance over time.

2. Incorporate high-intensity interval training (HIIT). HIIT workouts involve alternating between periods of high-intensity exercise and short recovery periods. HIIT effectively reduces visceral fat while preserving muscle mass and improving cardiovascular fitness. Include HIIT sessions 2-3 times per week.

3. Focus on a protein-rich diet. Consume adequate protein to support muscle repair while promoting fat loss. Include lean protein sources (chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, tempeh, legumes, etc.) in your daily meals.

4. Emphasize whole foods. Choose nutrient-dense, whole foods over processed and refined sugars and carbs. Opt for a balanced diet and fiber-rich ingredients to promote satiety and regulate blood sugar levels.

5. Get sufficient rest. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. This encourages optimal metabolic function, hormone regulation, and recovery. Inadequate sleep can disrupt appetite-regulating hormones, increase cravings for unhealthy foods, and impair fat loss efforts. When in doubt, establish a consistent sleep schedule!

The Best Eye-Tightening Creams, According to Skin Experts

Tightening my under eyes and upper eyelids had never been a concern for me until I hit my mid-twenties. As I started to etch closer to 30, I gradually began to lose fat and collagen around my eyes, causing them to look more hollow, droopy, and tired. I was frequently being asked if I got enough sleep. (Or worse, told I looked exhausted.) But it had nothing to do with sleep. Instead, my fresh, youthful, and plump eyes had been replaced by a permanent baggy look. It was then that I embarked on my search for the best eye-tightening cream.

Before this fateful shift in my skin, I was focused on acne, hyperpigmentation, and reversing sun damage. Incorporating an eye-tightening cream was never a priority. I rarely used an under-eye cream, let alone a hyper-focused one.

So, when it came to finding the right solution to tighten my eye area (and address the fine lines that had been cropping up), I tested a plethora of creams, serums, and tools to help slow the signs of aging. To be clear, this was only the beginning. Incorporating hydration, tools such as gua sha, micro-needling and microcurrent, healthy sleep habits, and supplements in conjunction with an eye cream is what I found to be the holy grail of tightening and lifting my eyes. If I strayed away from not combining all these things, I noticed a huge difference in appearance.

The Experts on Eye-Tightening Creams

I asked Dr. Nancy Samolitis, co-founder of Facile, and Kerry Benjamin, aesthetician and founder of Stacked Skincare, why we actually need eye creams, best practices, and their favorites when it comes to tightening the eye area.

Dr. Samolitis explained that the skin around the eyes often shows signs of aging before other areas of the face or body. This is often due to a loss of collagen and elasticity (which is what I was experiencing), leading to a darkened appearance, dull, crepey skin, and fine wrinkles. Some people genetically have excess fat under the eyelid skin and this can also be more pronounced with aging and sun damage, creating the appearance of under-eye “bags.”

What to Look for in an Eye-Tightening Cream

Because the skin around your eyes is far thinner and more delicate than the other skin on your face, Benjamin shared that this area is also prone to dehydration but generally requires lighter moisturizers because of the risk of milia—the tiny, white, difficult-to-remove bumps that can be caused by using rich moisturizers around the eye area.

The Skinny on Eye Serums

She recommended investing in an eye serum loaded with active ingredients. Eye serums are lighter in texture, which means they penetrate the skin and deliver anti-aging ingredients more effectively. They also generally contain a higher concentration of active ingredients than eye creams, which means you’ll see faster results.

Tips for Use and Application

Both Dr. Samolitis and Benajmin emphasized starting sooner than later when it comes to preventive treatments. Incorporating a tightening cream in your mid-20s could save you from needing intensive treatments in the future. As far as the frequency of use, twice a day is recommended unless there is an active ingredient such as retinol that could cause irritation.

But what is the best way to actually apply eye cream? The rationale behind using your pinky finger or ring finger to apply eye cream is due to the importance of a gentle tapping motion rather than pulling on the skin, explains Dr. Samolitis. And Benjamin agrees. If you pull or tug when applying eye cream it can lead to bagginess and sagginess.

Eye-Tightening Treatments

Beyond eye creams, Dr. Samolitis often uses in-office medical treatments like micro-needling, laser resurfacing, and PRP treatments that can improve the under-eye skin by repairing sun-damaged cells and producing new collagen to thicken the delicate tissue.

Benjamin suggests at-home tools to pair with their cream or serum such as a derma roller to help stimulate collagen and plump the skin along with an ice roller to give you a temporary tightening effect while reducing puffiness.

7 Summer Decor Trends Designers Say Will Be Everywhere

Published

on

We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

When I think of summers at home, a few things come to mind: sliced watermelon in the fridge, the scent of sunscreen on sun-warmed skin, and light streaming through the morning windows. The rhythms of life at home shift with the season as well—the days are longer, kids are home from school, and home becomes a retreat from the heat and humidity of summer. Most would say it’s the season to kick back and relax a little more than normal, and updating your home with this year’s summer decor trends is our favorite way to welcome the ease this season brings.

Featured image from Jodie Fried’s Home Tour.

This year’s summer decor trends reflect what we’ve been seeing all throughout 2024. We’re embracing all things big, bold, and colorful. It’s easy to see the influence pop culture is having on the present moment, especially if you’ve been listening to Cowboy Carter on repeat, and the general easy breezy, laid-back stylings that traditionally go so well with summer are there too.

There is truly something for everyone this season, whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist at heart. I chatted with a few experts and got their take on this season’s interior trends. Read on to learn what they’re seeing and loving this summer.

Book lovers rejoice: curating bookshelves at home is very much in this season. Bookshelf wealth was coined at the beginning of this year, and more and more, homeowners are mixing colors, textures and their favorite books to create personalized bookshelf displays.

“To create styled bookshelves with a warm and welcoming feel, continue collecting books you love over time and layer them with personal memorabilia, art, sculptures, and bud vases to curate a display [that’s] uniquely you,” Jacqueline Norrise, Founder of ADL Interiors suggests.

Western Charm

“I’m predicting a modified revival of the Western aesthetic this summer, where rustic charm meets modern sophistication,” Norrise muses. This makes total sense, as Beyoncé’s new country album is gracing just about everyone’s playlists this season.

Western style is no doubt making its way into our closets, as well as our homes. “Combining distressed leather and denim textiles with contemporary pieces can create a luxurious, yet warm atmosphere,” Norris explains. “Embrace the rustic refinement of this trend by incorporating natural materials such as wood and stone in art and sculptures to add depth and texture, and Western motifs in art, pillows, and throws.”

Organic Textures and Materiality

“Natural finishes like rattan, jute, and other weaves aren’t new, but they’re not going anywhere,” Heather Goerzen, Design Director at Havenly states. “Organic textures continue to reign supreme in summer 2024, mostly thanks to their relaxed, lived-in look that blend effortlessly with other furnishings and styles, whether it’s classic influences or a more modern twist.”

Audrey Scheck of Audrey Scheck Designs is no stranger to these materials and often uses them in her designs. “Rattan, wicker, and cane furniture infuses warmth and texture into spaces while maintaining an airy feel,” she shares.

We love natural finishes and organic materials, so this is a trend we can back wholeheartedly. Norrise recommends you be on the lookout for macrame and crochet this season as well. “Incorporating these handcrafted textiles reflects a desire to infuse our spaces with character and a sense of calm, adding warmth, texture, and an artisanal touch to any room,” she says.

Pattern Play

“This year, we’re noticing one clear trend emerging ahead of summer 2024: pops of pattern,” Goerzen states. “While pattern, in general, has been making a slow but steady comeback in the last few years —thanks in part to the rising popularity of traditional design—we predict that it will hit its peak this summer and continue into the rest of 2024.”

Whether you prefer stripes, polka dots or prints featuring exotic animals, this summer is a great time to infuse your personality into your space with some playful patterns you may not have thought to use over the past few years.

“Thanks to the design world’s collective love of all things mid-century modern and Scandinavian minimal, pattern rarely went outside the realm of subtle stripes or geometric motifs,” Goerzen explains. “But now, it appears we’re going all in—vintage-inspired floral and bold animal prints we wouldn’t have even considered five or so years ago are slowly going more mainstream. Nothing is off limits!”

Scheck agrees. “We’re particularly captivated by block prints and botanical motifs, adding a playful yet understated flair to any room,” she says.

Bringing the Outdoors In

If everything is in bloom during spring, summer is the season of continued abundance. Trees are lush and green, summer produce is bursting with color and flavor, and weaving some of that magic into your space is perfect for the season. Bringing the outdoors in and using lots of greens, terracotta and brown nature-inspired colors and patterns is definitely trending now,” Jill Steinberg, Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer of Fine & Dandy Co. shares. “We’re also seeing lots of botanicals and landscape murals being incorporated into homes.”

“Nature is forever and always in style,” Goerzen adds. In addition to nature-inspired patterns and colors, don’t be afraid to incorporate indoor plants into your home if they’re not there already. Nothing livens up a space more than a plant.

Wall-to-Wall Wallpaper

2024 is the year of making bold design choices, so it’s fitting that we’ve moved beyond statement walls and are now embracing wall-to-wall wallpaper. “Wrapping a whole room in a wallpaper mural or in a bold pattern is becoming more popular than just a feature wall, as people want to create a room that feels immersive and layered,” Steinberg shares.

Whether you decide on a smaller, subtle print or a large one, putting wallpaper on every single wall will completely immerse your space in color and pattern—very clearly making a big statement. “I love the idea of creating a room that can transport you to another place or time and there’s no better way to achieve this than with wallpaper!” Steinberg remarks.

Bold Palettes

Fearless color palettes have been taking center stage all of 2024, and this interior trend is sticking around for summer. “We are seeing a continued movement away from all-neutral-everything decor as we head into summer 2024,” Goerzen says. “It’s all about embracing color, personality, and drama with more saturated spaces—particularly in upholstery and paint”

If you’ve been thinking of painting your home office a fun color or have been on the fence about buying that accent chair with a funky pattern, now is the time to go all in with your design choices. Not sure where to start? “Think tried and true blues, rich and sexy greens, alluring marigolds and ambers, and of course, the classic pop of red that’s dominating the fashion and design scene alike,” Goerzen suggests. “It’s a season for expression in all of its shades.”
